Ecstatic

"A study of fleeting emotion—the instant when feeling becomes visible before it disappears again. "
The Question
What can a single expression reveal about what it means to be human?
How much can we understand from an emotion that lasts only for a moment?
About the Work
Some emotions arrive and disappear almost as quickly as they came.
A smile.
A look of surprise.
A moment of delight.
A sudden feeling that passes across someone’s face before they return to whatever came next.
Ecstatic explores one of those fleeting moments.
The expression exists for only an instant, yet within that instant there is something unmistakably human—the ability to feel deeply, to express what we feel, and to recognize emotion in others.
These moments are easy to overlook because they happen so quickly.
But perhaps that is precisely what makes them worth preserving.
A painting can hold still what life cannot.
What exists for only a second in reality can remain for generations on a canvas.
Looking Closely
The expression
A fleeting emotional response captured at a moment when feeling becomes visible.
The eyes and gaze
The eyes become an important part of the emotional exchange between the figure and the viewer.
The subtle changes in the face
Small movements in the features transform an ordinary portrait into a moment of emotional expression.
The tension between stillness and movement
The painting is physically still, yet the expression suggests something that has just happened—or is about to happen.
From the Studio
Every painting teaches me something I wasn’t expecting.
While creating Ecstatic, I became fascinated by how quickly an expression can change.
A person can look completely different from one moment to the next—not because they have changed, but because something within them has.
That made me think about what portraiture can actually preserve.
We often think of a portrait as a record of what someone looks like.
But perhaps it can be something more.
It can preserve a feeling.
A reaction.
A moment of connection.
A glimpse of the person that might otherwise disappear before we have even had time to notice it.
Pause & Reflect
What do you feel when you look at her expression?
Can you remember a moment when someone’s expression communicated something without them saying a word?
What fleeting moments in your own life would you want to preserve forever?
Within the Collection
Ecstatic belongs to the Foundations Collection, a body of work representing an important period of experimentation, observation, and artistic development.
Created in 2020, it is part of the same series as Ponder. Together, the two paintings explore different kinds of inner experience through portraiture.
Ponder turns inward—toward thought, contemplation, and the private world of the mind.
Ecstatic turns outward—toward expression, emotion, and the moment an internal feeling becomes visible.
Together, they became part of my continuing exploration of how portraiture can communicate something beyond physical likeness.
