"A quiet moment of contemplation, where a passing thought becomes its own little world. "
The Question
What might be happening inside someone’s mind when we cannot hear their thoughts?
What thought could bring a quiet smile to someone’s face?
About the Work
A girl looks downward, absorbed in a thought of her own.
Perhaps she is reading something.
Perhaps she has just remembered something that made her smile.
Or perhaps her thoughts have simply wandered somewhere beyond what we can see.
Ponder began with an interest in that quiet space between what is visible and what remains private.
We can observe someone’s expression, their posture, and the direction of their gaze, yet we can never completely know what is happening within them.
The slight smile becomes a clue—but not an answer.
And perhaps that uncertainty is what makes the moment interesting.
Rather than telling us exactly what she is thinking, the painting leaves room for us to imagine.
Looking Closely
Her downward gaze
A small gesture that creates the feeling of an intimate, private moment.
The subtle expression
A barely perceptible smile suggests that something pleasant may be unfolding within her thoughts.
The relationship between light and shadow
The light draws attention toward the figure while allowing the surrounding space to remain quiet.
The space left unexplained
Nothing tells us exactly what she is thinking.
That is intentional.
The unanswered question becomes part of the painting.
From the Studio
Every painting teaches me something I wasn’t expecting.
While creating Ponder, I became interested in how little we actually need to know in order to become curious about another person.
A glance can make us wonder.
A smile can make us imagine a story.
A quiet expression can suggest an entire world that exists beyond what we can see.
I enjoy that uncertainty.
As a painter, I can observe the outside of a person, but I can never completely paint what is happening inside their mind.
Perhaps the best I can do is leave enough space for the viewer to wonder.
Pause & Reflect
What do you imagine she is thinking about?
Have you ever caught yourself smiling because of a thought that existed entirely within your own mind?
How much of another person’s inner world can we truly know?
Within the Collection
Ponder belongs to the Foundations Collection, a body of work representing an important period of experimentation, observation, and artistic development.
Created in 2020, it belongs to the same series as Ecstatic, where I explored moments of human expression and the subtle emotions that can exist within an ordinary moment.
These paintings became part of my continuing study of portraiture—not simply as a way of recording someone’s appearance, but as a way of exploring the inner worlds we imagine behind what we see.
