A Swiftly Moment

Foundations Collection

2021

"A study of fleeting moments, perception, and the stories we imagine within a single gaze. "

The Question

Where does her gaze lead us?

Is she looking at us—or at something beyond us?

And can we ever truly know what someone is thinking from a single expression?

About the Work

Some moments exist for only an instant.

A glance.

A change in expression.

A fleeting thought that crosses someone’s mind before it disappears.

A Swiftly Moment began with an interest in that difficult space between observation and interpretation.

As viewers, we naturally try to understand what we see. We read expressions, follow someone’s gaze, and begin constructing a story around the moment.

But a gaze can be ambiguous.

She may be looking directly at us.

She may be looking beyond us.

She may be thinking about something entirely unrelated to what we imagine.

That uncertainty is what makes the moment compelling.

Timing is everything.

To capture such a moment is to preserve something that otherwise might have disappeared before anyone noticed it.

Looking Closely

The direction of her gaze

A seemingly simple gesture that leaves the viewer questioning where her attention truly lies.

The expression

A subtle expression gives us just enough information to begin imagining a story, without revealing the whole of it.

The moment of observation

The painting feels suspended in time—as though we have entered the scene for only a fraction of a second.

The space beyond the frame

What she sees remains outside our view, allowing our imagination to complete the story.

From the Studio

Every painting teaches me something I wasn’t expecting.

While creating A Swiftly Moment, I became interested in how much meaning we try to find in a single glance.

As painters, we spend hours observing a face—its structure, expression, light, and subtle changes. Yet even after all that observation, we can never completely know what is happening inside another person’s mind.

That is part of what makes portraiture so fascinating to me.

We can capture the appearance of a moment.

We can suggest an emotion.

We can preserve a gaze.

But the story behind it ultimately belongs partly to the viewer.

Perhaps that is why a fleeting expression can stay with us long after the moment itself has passed.

Pause & Reflect

Where do you think her gaze is leading her?

What do you imagine she is thinking about?

Have you ever looked at someone and wondered about the story behind their expression?

Within the Collection

A Swiftly Moment belongs to the Foundations Collection, a body of work representing an important period of experimentation, observation, and artistic development.

Created in 2019, this work reflects my continuing study of portraiture and my fascination with the subtle moments that can reveal—or conceal—something about a person.

These paintings became part of the foundation of my practice as I learned not only to observe what was visible, but also to consider the stories and emotions that might exist beyond it.

Looking back, the work represents an important part of learning how to capture presence rather than simply likeness.
